چکیده

The foetal pH values of eighty-eight cases delivered within 30 min after foetal blood sampling were correlated with the 1-min Apgar score. With a pH of 7.20 or above the error of prediction was 1'3%o. The error in cases with pH below 7.20 was 54'5/. Significantly higher pH and lower A base deficit were present in the low foetal pH group in vigorous, as opposed to depressed infants, suggesting that infusion acidosis was present in infants with a high Apgar score. The degree of correlation between the foetal pH and the Apgar score was not significantly influenced by shortening the sampling-delivery interval to 15 min or lengthening it to 3 hr. The most significant factor affecting the degree of correlation in the present study was the setting of the critical pH. If the criterion of the critical pH was taken as 7-13 there would have been no false positive results and the error of prediction in cases delivered within 30 min of foetal blood sampling would be reduced to 1.1%.

Extended Abstract Introduction and Background : in the first minutes of life it’s important to assess newborn condition very fast but effective and decide about medical intervention as needed. Umbilical artery blood gas analysis and Apgar scoring are the most common assessment systems which studies are trying to more sensitive and accurate way.in this study we compare Apgar scoring system an...

Foetal Acid-base Balance at Caesarean Section

Sir,—In the Correspondence section of the Journal (1972, 44, 233) Dr Marx mentioned that foetal acid-base values obtained from umbilical artery blood at Caesarean sections did not correlate with the condition of the newborn infant at birth. I should like to provide evidence that acid-base values of umbilical artery blood are not reliable at Caesarean sections under general anaesthesia. We measu...

The Correlation between Infants’ Birth Weight and Apgar Score and Maternal Hemoglobin Concentration

Background: Various studies have come to contradictory results regarding the relationship between maternal hemoglobin (Hb) level and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The present study aimed to investigate the birth outcomes among pregnant women who had normal hemoglobin levels in the first trimester of their pregnancy. Patients and Methods: In this prospective study, 108 healthy pregnant women wi...

Significance of the individual components of the Apgar score.

An analysis of the relationship between the individual components of the 1 min Apgar score, and of each of them with the acid-base status of the infant at delivery, is presented. It is based upon data from four groups of cases: Caesarean section (188), vaginal deliveries conducted under lumbar epidural block (54), and vaginal deliveries without epidural block, the mothers having received no nar...
